Myth: There's too much practice.
Fact: The select teams don't practice more than the typical recreation team. Practices are usually held two times per week and run about 1 1/2 hours.
Myth: Select teams play too many games.
Fact: Select team league games include 8 games in the fall and 8 games in the spring. Half of these games are played on home fields and the Justice Center. Select teams do enter a few tournaments each spring and fall. The kids quickly learn to look forward to these fun times of hanging out with their friends playing a sport they enjoy. You'll already know or meet the other parents on the team and enjoy the group, too. There is often time to run home between games if you really, really want to clean the house or cut the grass. If not, you can follow the crowd to the mall.
Myth: Players must play year 'round.
Fact: Not true! Of course, the more a person plays the better player they can become. But winter indoor play at Uihlein Soccer Complex on Good Hope Rd is optional. Uihlein runs three sessions consisting of one night of play per team. Individual teams often skip the second session to play basketball and then return for the third session to get in shape for the spring outdoor season. Fewer players take the field and games are shorter; therefore, a full roster isn't necessary for teams to participate in a session.
Myth: There is too much travel.
Fact: Most games are within one hour of travel from Port Washington. Even tournaments are usually within driving distance from home. Occasionally a team will choose one tournament further away requiring an overnight stay in a hotel. These weekends prove to be fun for the kids who get to play the sport they love, hang out with friends plus enjoy a hotel's pool. Can't make the travel to every game? You are not alone. Carpooling is very common.
Myth: Select Soccer is expensive.
Fact: Select soccer does cost more than recreational soccer; but you get more for your money. Your child will receive training from experienced, paid coaches, and they'll play at a higher level of competition. You'll quickly see this benefit to your child's skill development. Self-confidence usually soars with select players and team interaction skills transcend the playing field to real life. Nowadays, making a competitive high school team practically requires the preparation and skill development of select club soccer.
